Deane R. Hinton

Ambassador Deane R. Hinton is one of the State Department’s most distinguished Latin American experts. He has the personal rank of career Ambassador, an honor accorded only to a handful of Foreign Service Officers.

From 1987 to 1990, he served as US Ambassador to Panama. Prior to that post, he was US Ambassador to Costa Rica (1987–1990), to Pakistan (1983–1987) and to El Salvador (1981–1983). Earlier, he served as Assistance Secretary of State for Economic Policy, an in several other foreign posts, including Guatemala and Chile.

Ambassador Hinton is a graduate of the University of Chicago and has done graduate work at Harvard and the National War College. He speaks French and Spanish and is a resident of San Jose, Costa Rica.
