Robert S. Ingersoll

Robert S. Ingersoll was the United States Ambassador to Japan from 1972-1973. He later served as Assistant Secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs in 1974 and as Deputy Secretary of State from 1974-1976. He was Deputy Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the University of Chicago from 1976-1981.

Before his service in Japan, Ambassador Ingersoll had spent some thirty-five years in private industry, the last thirty-three with the Borg-Warner Corporation in Chicago ending as Chairman and CEO. A past Chairman of the Japan Society Inc., he was a Director of the First National Bank of Chicago, Atlantic Richfield, Kraft, Inc., Honeywell, Weyerhaeuser and Caterpillar, Inc.

Currently, he is Chairman of the Panasonic Foundation and former Vice President and Member of the Board of the US Chamber of Commerce. He is a 1937 graduate of Yale.
