| Lawrence G. Rossin Ambassador Rossin became the Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Operations of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in September 2008. He provides policy support and guidance for NATO operations in Afghanistan, Kosovo, Iraq and at sea. Ambassador Rossin retired from the U.S. Foreign Service in 2004 after a 29 year career. He was Ambassador to Croatia, Chief of Mission in Kosovo, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs and Deputy Chief of Mission in spain. He served twice on the NSC staff, as Senior Director for Strategic Planning and South West Asia, and earlier as Director for Inter-American Affairs. In these and earlier positions in Mali, South Africa, Barbados, Grenada, Haiti and the Netherlands, he was involved in crisis management in the Balkans, Afghanistan, Iraq, Haiti and the Eastern Caribbean. Following his retirement and prior to his current position, Ambassador Rossin was UN Assistant Secretary General and Principal Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary General at the UN Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK), twice, and at the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH). He was also Senior International Coordinator for the Save Darfur Coalition, the leading American NGO active on this problem, establishing and leading the organization’s international outreach program. A 1975 graduate of Claremont Men’s College in California, Ambassador Rossin also attended the NATO Defense College, MIT’s “Seminar XXI” and the Aspen Institute’s Executive Seminar. He speaks French and Spanish and some Dutch and Croatian. He received the Presidential Distinguished Service Award, the State Depaertment’s Award for Valor and several other awards, and the Croatian Order of Duke Branimir. Married to Debra McGowan, a high school Spanish teacher, he is blessed with his daughter Claire and son Alec.
