Terence A. Todman Terence A. Todman, an International Consultant, is a mired U.S. Foreign Service Officer who holds the personal rank of Career Ambassador, a life-time title. He was Ambassador to Argentina (1989-93), to Denmark (1913-89), to Spain (1978-83), to Costa Rica (1957-71), to Guinea (1972-75), and to Chad (1969-72). In 1977 he was Assistant Secretary of State for Inter-American Affairs. Earlier Ambassador Todman served as Country Director for East African Affairs (1961-69), Deputy Chief of Mission and Charge d'Affaires in Togo (1965-68), Political Officer in Tunis (1961-64), Arabic Language and Area Specialist in Beirut (1960-61), Political Officer in New Delhi (1957-59), Advisor to U.S. Delegations to the U.N. General Assembly and U.S. Representative on various Trusteeship Council committees (1954-57), U.S. Government Intern on the U.N. Secretariat (1954) and Desk Officer for India-Ceylon-Nepal Affairs (1952). He served in the U.S. Army (1945-49) including a tour as a Commissioned Officer in Japan. He is in the Hall of Fame of the U.S. Infantry School at Fort Benning, Georgia. Ambassador Todman is President of Todman &. Associates, Inc. He is on Boards of Directors of companies based in Buenos Aires, Argentina and in the U.S. Virgin Islands. He is an Associate of Global Business Accounts, Ltd. He is a Consultant to various U.S. and Argentine companies. His recent focus has been on establishing joint ventures between U.S. and foreign companies with special emphasis on transportation and the environment. Ambassador Todman is on the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Diplomacy, the Association for Diplomatic Studies and Training, the Constituency for Africa and the Atlantic Council of the U.S. He is a Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration and a member of its International Panel. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and of its Committee on Washington Programs, the Washington Institute of Foreign Affairs, the American Foreign Service Association and the Thursday Luncheon Group, which is an organization of minority professionals in the foreign affairs agencies. He is also a member of the Maxwell School Advisory Board, Syracuse University; the Duke University Provost Advisory Council; and the Advisory Board of the African Studies Program, Georgetown University. Ambassador Todman has served recently on Foreign Service Selection Boards to consider and recommend the promotion of Career Ministers to the rank of Career Ambassadors. He was a member of the Accountability Review Board, which investigated and reported on the terrorist bombings of our embassies in East Africa. Ambassador Todman has received the Presidential Distinguished Service Award, the National Public Service Award, the Department of State’s Superior Service Honor Award and the Secretary of State's Distinguished Service Award. He has been decorated by the governments of Argentina, Denmark, Spain, Chad and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In November 1993 a special ceremony was held in his honor in Statuary Hall in the U.S. Congress. He was awarded the 1997 Department of State Director General’s Cup. Ambassador Todman was born in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. He holds a B.S. summa cum laude from Inter-American University, Puerto Rico and a Masters degree in Public Administration from Syracuse University, New York. He holds honorary Doctorate degrees from Colgate, Syracuse, Morgan State and Boston Universities. He is married to the former Doris Waston of the Virgin Islands. Their four children-Terence, Patricia, Kathryn, and Michael are pursuing their own professional careers.
