PUBLIC UNDERSTANDING OF THE ROLE OF DIPLOMACY IN ACHIEVING US FOREIGN
POLICY OBJECTIVES
This series
of conferences sponsored by the Academy of Diplomacy is intended
to enhance public understanding of US foreign policy objectives,
and the tools available to implement it, with emphasis on the opportunities
provided by diplomacy as well as its limitations.
The unprecedented direct attacks on September 11, 2001 underscored
the vulnerability of the United States to terrorism, and the global
nature of the threat that America will face in the 21st century.
These challenges make clear the need for a coherent worldwide strategy
and a broadened public understanding of and support for diplomacy,
bulwarked by effective intelligence, military force, and a strong
economy, in achieving US foreign policy and national security goals.
The
series, which is made possible by a generous grant from the Honorable
Hushang Ansary, will include lectures, seminars, panels, town hall
discussions and papers focused on specific foreign policy issues.
The series will draw upon Academy members as well as policy experts
from the public domain. The program, designed to assist the American
public to better understand the many challenges that lie ahead,
will provide a forum for dialogue on a non-partisan basis, focusing
on practical rather than theoretical strategies.
