Panel Discussion and Luncheon
CSIS
October 29, 2009

U.S. diplomacy in Africa is at a crossroad. There is a need to define more clearly the role of diplomatic instruments and the Department of State in the shaping and conduct of policy toward African conflict zones. A panel of experts will discuss the major diplomatic challenges facing Africa and examine the policy tools which the U.S. can use to meet the challenges. There will also be a panel to analyze three of the continent's diplomatic "hot spots;" the Horn of Africa, the Great Lakes region and Nigeria. The discussion will be held in the CSIS's B1 Conference Center located at 1800 K Street, NW, Washinton, DC from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Diplomacy and Nonproliferation
Panel Discussion and Luncheon
Union League of Philadelphia
March 12, 2009

The prospect of Iran becoming a nuclear weapons state, the possibility that a terrorist group will gain access to nuclear weapons or other weapons of mass destruction, or the prospect of an increasingly destabilized Pakistan--a nuclear armed country-- all make avoiding nuclear proliferation one of America's highest priorities. How can diplomacy prevent the spread of nuclear weapons?  To discuss this highly relevant and topical issue as well as explore both options of total elimination of nuclear weapons or strategic arms reduction, the American Academy of Diplomacy and the Foreign Policy Research Institute organized a panel discussion featuring leading figures in the field of arms control and diplomacy. The discussion was held at the Union League of Philadelphia on March 12, 2009, and featured Ambassador Avis Bohlen and Joseph Cirincione as panelists, with Ambassador Marc Grossman as moderator. Ambassador Max Kampelman delivered a keynote address on "The Question of Global Zero" at a luncheon following the discussion.
