The Peoria Area World Affairs Council (PAWAC) and the Peoria Riverfront Museum will host a special screening of the documentary America’s Diplomats on Thursday, June 15, 2017, in the Giant Screen Theater.  The event begins 6:30 PM and will include a post- screening discussion with Ambassador Ronald E. Neumann, who has held postings to Algeria, Bahrain, and Afghanistan. Appointed Ambassadors, diplomats, and career Foreign Service officers are on the front lines of United States foreign policy on a daily basis.  Yet the many roles and responsibilities of these dedicated officials beyond passport and visa processing are often a mystery to the American public. The 2016 documentary America’s Diplomats explores the history of the Foreign Service, the vital role the Foreign Service has in shaping United States foreign policy, and the security threats American diplomats face abroad.  The post-screening discussion with Ronald E. Neumann will expand on these issues with comments regarding embassy and consulate security protocols, decision making in times of immediate threats, and the difficulties diplomats face in their overseas daily interactions. Ronald E. Neumann is a former Deputy Secretary of State and served three times as Ambassador; to Algeria, Bahrain and finally to Afghanistan from July 2005 to April 2007.  Before Afghanistan, Neumann, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, served in Baghdad from February 2004 with the Coalition Provisional Authority and then as Embassy Baghdad’s political/military liaison with the Multinational Command, where he was deeply involved in coordinating the political part of military actions.  He is the author of The Other War: Winning and Losing in Afghanistan, a book on his time in Afghanistan.
