Washington, D.C. – The American Academy of Diplomacy has released the following statement in support of the H.R. 5643 bill (“Bolstering the Effectiveness, Success, and Transparency of Ambassadors Act” or “BEST Ambassadors Act”), which has been introduced on October 20, 2021 by Rep. Andy Levin (D-MI-9) and co-sponsored by Rep. Peter Meijer (R-MI-3):

“Appointing fully qualified ambassadors to represent America abroad is a high-priority national interest. Qualified diplomats are needed in all foreign affairs positions, but especially ambassadors, who are the president’s representatives and the face of America in our missions abroad. The Bolstering the Effectiveness, Success, and Transparency of Ambassadors Act is an important step toward this goal. The American Academy of Diplomacy endorses the bill and hopes it will find strong bipartisan support and advance into law.”

The American Academy of Diplomacy is a non-partisan and non-governmental organization of former senior diplomats including both career and non-career appointees. It is dedicated to strengthening the professionalism of diplomacy and explaining to the American people the importance of diplomacy.
