Washington, D.C. – The American Academy of Diplomacy has released the following statement in support of the H.R. 8161 bill (“Expeditionary Diplomacy Act”), which has been introduced on April 2, 2026 by Rep. Sara Jacobs (D-CA-51) and co-sponsored by Rep. Michael Baumgartner (R-WA-5):
The American Academy of Diplomacy supports and urges passage of a bill to "encourage the practice of expeditionary diplomacy at the Department of State." This bill recognizes the recurring need for American diplomacy to operate prudently under difficult and sometimes dangerous conditions. It advances the need to study and plan for such operations.
The American Academy of Diplomacy is a non-partisan and non-governmental organization of former senior diplomats including both career and non-career appointees. It is dedicated to strengthening the professionalism of diplomacy and explaining to the American people the importance of diplomacy.
This statement has been approved by the Board of Directors of the Academy.
