Academy Announces 2022 Dillon Book Award Winner Washington, D.C. – The American Academy of Diplomacy is pleased to announce that the winner of the 2022 Douglas Dillon Book Award for a Book of Distinction on the Practice of American Diplomacy is Winning and Losing the Nuclear Peace: The Rise, Demise, and Revival of Arms Control by Michael Krepon, published by Stanford University Press.

Winning and Losing the Nuclear Peace is a magisterial assessment of the entire eight decades of diplomatic history of nuclear arms control and its symbiotic relationship with deterrence. Michael Krepon covers both East-West negotiations and non-proliferation efforts world-wide, focusing on the people who made nuclear arms control and those who opposed them – their motives, tactics, the interactions among them, their successes and failures, as well as the political environments in which they operated. The book is written in an engaging prose making the subject accessible not just to experts, but also to general audiences and students. It is likely to remain the standard reference for many years.

As the Academy celebrates Winning and Losing the Nuclear Peace, it also mourns the passing of its author earlier this year. Michael Krepon was an internationally renowned leader in the fight to prevent nuclear war. His life’s work made a difference in the world, and he will be greatly missed. The 2022 Dillon Book Award will be formally presented on November 9, 2022 at the Academy’s Annual Awards Luncheon at the State Department and will be accepted by the family of Michael Krepon. END
