AAD Staff

Washington, D.C. – The American Academy of Diplomacy released the following statement in support of H.R. 1273 (“Peace Corps Reauthorization Act of 2023”), which has been reintroduced in the 118th Congress on March 1, 2023 by Rep. John Garamendi (D-CA) and co-sponsored by Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-NY), Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee; Rep. Garret Graves (R-LA), cochair of the Congressional Peace Corps Caucus; and Rep. Aumua Amata Coleman Radewagen (R-AS):

“As former senior diplomats and diplomatic practitioners, a number of whom have served as Peace Corps Volunteers, we recognize that the Peace Corps represents a significant strength in America’s soft power diplomacy and creates a favorable impression of the United States and its people abroad. Accordingly, the American Academy of Diplomacy strongly endorses the bipartisan “Peace Corps Reauthorization Act” (H.R.1273) and urges its rapid passage into law.”

The American Academy of Diplomacy is a non-partisan and non-governmental organization of former senior diplomats including both career and non-career appointees. It is dedicated to strengthening the professionalism of diplomacy and explaining to the American people the importance of diplomacy. This statement has been approved by the Board of Directors of the Academy.
