Coalitions: Building and Maintenance

In the aftermath of September 11th, and with the ensuing need for a broad and multi-layered international coalition to respond to the terrorist threat, the Institute for the Study of Diplomacy (ISD) and the American Academy of Diplomacy initiated a major project on coalition building and maintenance. A senior-level working group was established under the co-chairmanship of Lee H. Hamilton, then-director of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and Hans Binnendijk, Founding Director of the Center for Technology and National Security Policy at the National Defense University. Casimir A. Yost was director of ISD, and Bruce Laingen was president of the Academy; both served as the project’s directors with Andrew J. Pierre as its executive director.
