Out and Abroad: Queer Representation in American Diplomacy

For his project, Kobe Young interviewed two Academy members and one Foreign Service Officer to explore the evolving role of LGBTQ+ individuals in the U.S. Foreign Service. He traces the journey from exclusion during the Lavender Scare to today’s growing inclusivity and advocacy. Through the experiences of diplomats, the project highlights how queer diplomats have advanced human rights and challenged norms even in conservative postings, shaping diplomacy by proudly representing both America and themselves.
