Dennis

Dennis B. Hankins, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, class of Minister-Counselor, currently serves as the United States Ambassador to Haiti. Mr. Hankins has previously served at the Pentagon as the Foreign Policy Advisor to the National Guard Bureau and as Ambassador to the Republic of Mali and to the Republic of Guinea. He has served three times as Deputy Chief of Mission, in Sudan, Mauritania and Mozambique, Principal Officer in Sao Paulo, Brazil and Consul General in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Earlier in his Foreign Service career, Mr. Hankins was Political and Economic Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Portugal, and Political Section chief in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In the early 1990’s, he served in Haiti as the Nonimmigrant Visa Chief and the Refugee Coordinator. Other assignments overseas include Sudan, Thailand and Recife, Brazil. Washington assignments include Deputy Director for Peacekeeping, Senior Watch Officer, and Angola desk officer.

Mr. Hankins earned his Bachelor’s degree at Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service, and his Master’s degree at the National War College. He is the recipient of numerous State Department performance awards. His foreign languages include French, Portuguese, and Indonesian.
