Preventing Genocide

The year 2008 marked the 60th anniversary of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. It was also the 20th anniversary of the ratification of this treaty by the United States. As Americans considered our country’s role in the world in the years to come, the authors were and remain convinced that the US government can and must do more to prevent genocide, a crime that threatens not only our values, but our national interests. Preventing Genocide provided a blueprint that could enable the United States to take preventive action, along with international partners, to forestall the specter of future cases of genocide and mass atrocities.
