Redman

Charles E.

Charles Edgar Redman (born December 24, 1943 in Waukegan, Illinois) is a former United States diplomat. From 1987 to 1989, he was Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs. He served as United States Ambassador to Sweden from 1989-1992, and United States Ambassador to Germany from 1994-1996. In 1996 he joined Bechtel Group, Inc. as senior vice president.

Redman is senior vice president and manager of external affairs for Bechtel Group, Inc. He is also the president of Bechtel Industrial Company. From 1994 until he joined Bechtel in 1996, Redman served as United States Ambassador to Germany, capping a distinguished career of 22 years in the Foreign Service. As U.S. Special Envoy for the former Yugoslavia (1993-94), he negotiated the Washington Agreement that ended the war between Bosnian Muslims and Croats and created the Bosnian Federation. In 1993, while serving as Special Charge d’Affaires in Port-au-Prince, he negotiated the Governor’s Island Accord, which served as the basis for the restoration of democracy in Haiti.

During the Bush administration, Redman served as U.S. Ambassador to Sweden. He was appointed Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs by President Reagan and served concurrently (1985-89) as State Department spokesman for Secretary of State George Schultz.

In other diplomatic assignments, Redman served as a political officer in the U.S. Embassy in Paris, in the office of the Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in Brussels, as political counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Algiers, and as head of the Office of Regional Political-Military (NATO) Affairs in Washington, D.C.
